Move "LAN mode" to "operation mode" & disable WAN tab in "computer mode"
This is a discussion issue.
LAN mode could be now changed in LAN tab. Available options are:
- Computer
- Router
The LAN mode however affects also the WAN tab and thus should be superior to the both tabs.
I propose renaming LAN mode to Operational mode and maybe also rename the options to:
- Computer/Access point
- Router
.. because somebody may use Turris/MOX exactly like an AP and may by confused by the term Computer
The WAN tab should be disabled / removed when Computer mode is selected.
See TP-link demo where the same issue was solved.
EDIT: After some research I've got the idea behind LAN mode - it really deserves it name LAN because it really doesn't affect WAN behavior at all. After switching to Computer mode the WAN IP address is kept and the device could be even used as a router the same way as before. The only difference is you cant enable DHCP server on the LAN interface. In the same manner you are not allowed to enable DHCP client in Router mode.
Thus I think the only misleading part here is the naming - Router vs. Computer - because when something is called Router you would expect it to deal with interconnecting WAN & LAN, not to deal with enabling/disabling DHCP in different ways.
You can emulate operational mode Router
by using LAN mode router
and moving WAN
interface to WAN
network. The same way can emulate operational mode Computer/Access point
by using LAN mode Computer
and moving WAN
interface to LAN
network.
As a result I update my proposal of two operational modes
:
-
Computer / Access point
-
WAN
interface automatically moved toLAN
network -
WAN
network removed &WAN
tab removed - you can choose between static IP addr or DHCP client on your
LAN
bridge - you are allowed to enable DHCP server (in case you don't use DHCP client
⬆ )
-
-
Router / Wireless router
-
WAN
keeps away fromLAN
bridge - your are announced that
WAN
interface is removed fromLAN
bridge when switching fromComputer mode
- you can choose between static IP / DHCP client on
WAN
interface - you can choose between static IP / DHCP client??? on
LAN
interface (static IP is preselected) - you can enable DHCP server on
LAN
interface when static IP is chosen (DHCP server enabled is preselected)
