Sync master and 1.2 branches except:

• kresc client
• workarounds module

@pspacek and @gdemidov please review as well

Ideas:

• It might be cleaner to just merge master and revert those couple of commits we want to leave out for now.
• If we do lots of cherry-picking, my experience is that the -x parameter to the command is useful.
• The changes seem significantly larger than what we were doing for 1.2.{1,2,3} so far, even adding simple features, but perhaps not enough to call it 1.3.
• I would personally include a316b9f7 and consider !210 (merged), but neither feels important.

Ok, merged those two, and yes I am adding small improvements there, but nothing significant.

I'll use -x next time, I didn't know about it and it looks useful.

We will have to merge back the NEWS to master, but it might be just easier to checkout the file there...
